Default radio question

Im thinking of upgrading to a better radio for my nitro vehicles.Currently I have an airtronics blazer which is 27 MHZ AM, I would like to upgrade to an FM, something like the MX3. I just have a couple of questions. First is it necessary to have 3 channels versus 2 what is the difference, also I see some radios come with ESC is this that important what is the purpose of this and I believe it stands for ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROL.

OK so since my nitros dont have reverse, then I wont benefit from the 3 channel then. So what about the ESC, what is its purpose?

An ESC is an Electronic Speed Controller, wihich you will not need of you are running nitro. ESC's are used on electric cars and trucks only. They control the throttle of the vehicle. Nitros just use a servo connected to the throttle linkage to control their speed. Hope that helps.
