Default Motor temp sensor placement

I picked up a temp/voltage monitor and am wondering which placement location others would consider on the motor for the temp sensor.
I am considering placing it in the thermal paste between the heatsink and motor can, or crack open the motor and install it inside the end of the motor.

Where would you guys opt to put the thermal censor?

On another note, the motor has a painted can (factory painted as its brand new), am I out to lunch thinking I maybe should remove the paint under where the heatsink will be mounted?

Just put it somewhere on the can. No need to put it into anything.

I wouldn't put it underneath the heatsink, that'll just ruin the heatsink's contact to the motor. The heatsink paste should be as thin as possible so no it can't make up for the sensor being between the heatsink and motor. I also wouldn't worry about the paint on the motor, it's impact is minor.
