If you are going to get a new radio, I suggest a FM radio, otherwise keep the stock one. Some of my personal favorites:
Futaba 3PM-FM
Futaba 3PM Synthesized
JR XR3i
JR XS3 Synthesized
Airtronics MX-3S Synthesized
Futaba 3PM-FM

Ya get a good FM radio. Sure there more expensive, but they work much better. I like the Futaba 3PM-FM or the Airtronics M11.

If you have to get one of those two, go with the Futaba. The only reason I say that is because parts are available for Futabas forever. I've got 20 year old Futaba radios that I can still get new parts for.
Otherwise, get a good FM radio. I've got the JRxs3 and like it.

I dont know why everyone reccomends the Spektrum, the 2.4 GHz is nice, but the radio itself isn't that great. Id reccomend the Hitec CRX/SRX with either the Spectra module (synthesized) or the Spektrum module (2.4 GHz)

Inverted , I agree on the radio Spektrum used , they could have used something up to date like XS3 or something similar . I have the Spektrum radio and a Ko Propo EX-1 Mars with Spektrum module and love that setup . But for the $ for a M11 , you mind as well go spektrum and not deal with frequncies . Or like you said a Hitec with Spek .

There is a nice varitey of radios that are module based which are mostly pretty good, and allow users to run the Spektrum module. In my opinion, the smaller size of the Hitec makes it very comfortable, and they are loaded with features. Id definately reccomend you dont waste money on 2ch AM radio's if your serious about r/c.

I have the futaba 2PL and use it on most of my models. I like it for the model memory and steering dual rate. And the Receivers are cheap enough that you'll be able to put one in every car. With an FM system that would cost $100's. You don't need to go FM unless you want to race.
