Default traxxas vxl overload protection problem

i just picked up a brand new traxxas slash and installed a new velineon brushless system. i built a custom 9 cell 4200 battery. i fully charge it, plug it into the velineon and when i turn it on it goes into overload protection. so i then removed a cell. it does the same thing even with 8 cells. this is rated for 9 cell nimh or 11.1 lipo. i dont see that happening. can someone please tell me if they are having the same problem or is this an user error. is this a common problem, recall???? Thanks, Adam
