Looks like Tam has the only conversion kit now complete with gear.
wonder if I can get a 10 lb thrust Wren 44 in it?

You can probably fit it in one way or another, but the Habu is heavy even with the P20. Then imagine mounting something 1lb heavier 2" further back... You will end up with 10lb of push but with an AUW of atleast 3lb more then the P20.

This is a long shot as no one has posted anything to this thread in over four years, but here goes. I'm getting to the Habu Turbine conversion a little late! I have an original Habu32 for which I bought the TamJets Struts way back in 2011 when I bought the Habu. After flying bigger turbines for the past seven years I decided to convert my Habu to turbine. I decided to go with one of the Lambert T35 turbines because it was smaller and more powerful than a P20 (it took me over a year on that decision alone). I was pleasantly surprised that Grumania still sells a two walled exhaust for the Habu, so I got that too. Next on the list was how to do brakes as they are required for this jet in the US. I found some 45mm wheels with electric brakes from FanJetsUSA, so I got those. Next I needed a fuel tank, so I made a mold and layed up a fiberglass tank, which fits nicely in the fuselage and holds 28oz. Now here is my question for all of you that have already done this conversion using the TamJet struts, how did you mount the struts to the eFlite retracts? The struts I have are made for a 4mm pin. The wire on the eFlite retract is about 3.5mm and is molded into the trunion so even if cut off the wire it still won't be a good fit for the strut. Anyway, if anyone can help I would really appreciate it, this is the last hurdle I have to jump to get my Habu in the air!

Thanks,

Tom

Undo the two M3 (1.5mm allen key) set screws in the pivot bar and pull out the wire leg...then drill to 4mm.
The wire is not moulded into the yoke

Dave,
That’s exactly what needed to know, thanks!

Here is another question, because the tamjet strut is much wider than the wire strut it does not look like there will be enough clearance for the strut to fully retract?

Thanks again for the help, I’m very close to having everything completed, just have figure out these retracts.

i never used a set, but thought there was a flat so the leg will go flat against the motor

Thanks Dave. I thought about grinding one side down but I’m worried it will weaken the strut too much. I’m thinking of fabricating an offset adapter.

Thanks again for the help!

I’ve fitted Tam struts on the stock gear. It’s been a while but I think I just removed a little material until it fit. David (LA Jets here on RCU) still has the airplane. PM him and I’m sure he will check. Gear wells needed a little rework too due to the trailing link.

The Tam trunion block has the strut hole offset to allow the strut to lay flat againest the motor. I still have a set and can post a photo.

I remember now I had some off set pins machined for a customer who bought Tams legs with the two centres off set to move the leg away from the motor.

Thanks so much for the info! If anyone has a set of the offset pins, or the Tams trunnion's they'd be willing to sell I would certainly appreciate it. In the meantime, I'll have to look into having some offset pins machined.

Thanks again for the help!

I found someone who had a set of these trunions, got electric brakes from FanJets USA, landing gear is all sorted out I'm ready for taxi testing...dry weight on the Xicoy is 6.7lbs, with 24oz of kero it should weight just shy of 8lbs at take off. The T35 is supposed to have 7.5lbs of thrust so power should not be an issue

I maidened my Habu with the T35 this past weekend, after take-off I was shocked that not a single click of trim was needed I flew it for about 4 minutes and then landed, had about 1/3 tank of fuel remaining after the 4 minutes of flying around at about 1/3 throttle, I could have flown at least another minute and still have enough fuel for a missed approach. She slowed down quite nicely on final but I ran out of elevator when trying to flare so she touched down in the grass short of the runway and rolled to a stop. I think I will back out some of the flaps for the next flight.

I agree with others that say this jet flies like it's much bigger, it really handles well in the air. I kept my speed down for the maiden (<130mph) so I don't know how she will behave at the higher speeds but so far I'm very impressed. Thanks to all on this thread for the help. -Tom

If anyone is interested I have a number of spun aluminium bell mouths still left over from my Habu conversions (can be seen in the post 775) this is the hardest part to make on a pipe so if anyone out there wants one I'm happy to do a decent deal to sell them on.

There's a guy over on RCGroups who wound up with the remaining inventory from Tamjets. His username is "moparman" or close, I just really remember the 'mopar" part of it. I bought a pair of smoke sticks from him just a little while ago. Whether he'd have any Habu stuff still available I do not know.

Here is the video from my maiden on 12/31/18:

Sorry about the choppiness of the video, I should have set my camera at 60 fps but forgot to do so before I gave it to my camera man. -Tom

I finally got out and was able to fly my Habu again. This time I reconfigured some components and got the CG back to 115 with about a 1/4 tank of fuel, which puts my empty tank CG around 120mm. This made a huge difference for landing, I was able to put the flaps down further (~60 deg) and still have plenty of elevator for a nice flair at touch down. I continue to be impressed with how well this little fellow flies. It handles every bit as well as my bigger jets except I can throw this guy in the car with no disassembly Now that I have learned how to properly start the T35 it is a joy to operate too!

Don't know if anyone is still watching this thread or not. I'm still flying the little red Habu above, however I've added another little Habu 32x to my fleet. This one powered by a K30. Here is a brief video:

Default Habu32

I started with edf jets before finally making the leap to gas jets and I admit that this has been the best edf I have ever owned and that I later converted to kerosene.
My Habu 32 is the old one, red in color and has had the P20SX (240kmh), then the K30 and now it rides the X45 (303kmh).

Let's see if Eflite or Horizon hobby get the batteries and release the third version that it's about time! I'm tired of seeing nothing else advertising foam planes!

I’ve got an X45 in a Freewing T33, 18 flights so far, very powerful!
