Default P20 Fod Screen Made at Home

If Marcs looks at this I am sure he will weep. Still here we go how to make a P20 Fod Screen..... Mk 1 I am sure I can improve on this.

if 3Dflip is looking come on you can do loads better than me

First get yourself some of this mesh from Halfords in the UK or a car parts shop if you live elsewhere

Cut a cardboard template as the picture below. The radius of the outer circle is about 90 mm

The radius of the inner circle is about 25 mm

I allowed about a 10 - 15 mm bit to overlap

NOTE EDDITED TO RADIUS NOT DIA AS ORIGINALLY POSTED

Once you have this template in card roll it into a cone shape and temp fix with paperclips. Then offer it up to your P20 and adjust things to fit reasonable

Once you have a reasonable fit mark and then trim the cardboard to the markings. Then unroll the card and draw round it onto your mesh

Cut out your mesh shape with ordinary scissors.......... The ones your wife uses for her dress making work will do fine

Now roll the mesh to the cone shape and temp secure it with paper clips. Offer up to the P20 and mark the bit you will need to snip away for the electrical connection. Remove and then snip this away. Now offer up again and adjust the overlap untill you have a reasonable fit. Hold in this position and remove and glue down the overlap with 5 min epoxy

Once the glue is dry make the small holes for the fuel and gas pipes and then create you own edging to the top and bottom. I used white electrical tape for the bottom and white silocon bath sealant for the top. It is a bit rough but it is a Mk1. I have still to make the small holes for the fuel and gas in the pic.

Total cost £2.99 (Enough mesh for 2) and a bit of time

When the Mastic dries I will show a pic of it on the P20

Another idea would be to let Marcs take this idea refine it into an amazing fit and nice piece of kit. Flog them for say £15 and give me a 10p royality on each one lol

or a free CAT air trap once he has made and sold loads

It took me about 1 hour which I enjoyed. Ok it could look much better but it will work and I have found that these P20s will suck in quite a lot of fod so I would rather have one even if it looks a little cack rather than not.

Have fun and why dont others have a go and improve on this rather simple idea

Hi Dennis, doesn't matter what it looks like, it will be hidden in the bowels of the fuselage anyway.

P-20 £1850, Dennis's FOD guard - priceless

lol I know what you mean. Untill I can buy the snazzy one from Jetcat at I hope a reasonable price this one will have to do. I am not that impressed with the Grumania one for £20.

Also I surpose this is actually the Mk2 cos the Mk1 was the one in my Mig 15 which I knocked up in about 10 mins before we flew it. Although it is a right bodge and overlaps mesh quite a bit it did actually stop quite a lot of fod from our grass strip. On the Mig I am going to seal in the front wheel well as a lot of the fod is comming from there.

Here is the Mk 1 or perhaps Mk 0 next to the Mk 1 or 2 lol

I have heard the Jetcat Fod screen should be out the middle of August. Does anyone know if that is still the case? Our field is grass and am worried about picking up trash that might damage my engine.

Well here is the Mk1 in place on the back of my Ducty................. Not that Pretty but I am sure it will work and for me and a first/second attempt I am quite happy with it. Nice to be easily pleased

As some would say................ It aint got to be perfect it has just got to work.

Yes, about then :-) Out of Dennis's price bracket I'm sure. Now the P-20 will be over 2k in the UK it's still cheap insurance...

Looking good, until I read the part about grabbing the wife's dressmaking scissors to cut the mesh. Get caught doing that around here you'll get a skillet up the head! Extreme caution is advised

A very useful thread to a very common problem, thank's for posting it.
If every manufacturer was as thoughtful as Wren we would not be needing
to make our own.

The next step will be the Chinese making a custom fit FOD screen for the P-20
for less than the cost of buying the mesh! - John.

Thanks

That would be good and I agree that for the money we pay for these turbines they should all have nice little fod screens

Just by the way - our FOD screen does not cost 20 pounds, not even 20 Euros.
For those who do not know how to change Euros to Pounds - Euros devided by 1,137= Pounds.
We will shortly offer the original JetCat FOD screens as well, but remember- you get what you pay for.The original one will have three times the price of the simple one.
As all FOD screens are doing their job it is a matter of taste what to choose.

I'd be careful about patronising people and making a mistake as you might end up looking a bit silly Your FOD screen from Al's Hobbies costs £20.99 and from Motors and Rotors costs £19.99.

It is pretty expensive for a modified tea strainer!!

On re-reading my post I may have been a bit harsh - sorry.

Doing a quick bit of maths (and assuming that UK retailers pay full retail price for the item and don't get a bulk/dealer discount) does that not equate to a 55% markup? That sounds pretty steep to me[&o]

Dennis, it might be worth seeing if this fits if you want to make it even cheaper I have seen it once and it looked like it might be about the right size.

The problem with tea strainers is the very fine mesh, I think they may be a bit restrictive for the little P20.

Don't you think it would be possible to form the aluminum mesh in a tea strainer form pushing it in to a small bowl? the sphere form is self stabilizing = good for not beeing inhaled by the P20 ;-)

I tested the MK2 Fod screen today at full throttle and it worked very well. I think the cone shape is best as I feel that there is less resistance to airflow. At full chat the screen shows no sign of movement. Come on guys give it a go and make one we are supposed to be modellers not just people that buy things that are made for us (Says he who has just bought a Bind and fly Taylor Craft )
