Default Birdstrike: Pigeon-BVM F-86

A WREN turbine powered BVM F-86 Sabre hit a Pigeon during a display flight yesterday, at the presently ongoing German "Jet Power" meet, close to Cologne.

After impact the WREN display pilot made a tremendous job the get the F-86 safely back. He made two circuits above the field to asses damage, where he realized the nose gear wouldn't extend. A nose gear up ldg was performed without problem and the damage could be inspected:
LH wing leading was badly dented close to the fuselage
LH side of fuselage was badly damaged at point of impact, fresh meat had to be extracted from inside the fuse.
One elevator servo u/s
Engine,ECU and all major equipment inside the fuse was LOOSE, rattling around. Eng + pipe could freely twist and move back/fwd.
Several plywood parts glued to fuse was broken including a main bulkhead.

Despite all this, the plane was safely returned with eng running fine.

One deceased pigeon was found next to the rwy, with its belly ripped open....

Have a great weekend
Thomas

I've seen some close calls but never actually witnessed any bird strikes. That cool he was able to land safely. The plane looks repairable.

Poor pigeon ! May god blees it ! Jets should be equipped with onboard klaxons !!!!!!

BTW, I remember a starjet hitting a bird, photo was included in an RCJI issue ... Half elevator was ripped off, landed safely too ... Can't remember how the bird felt after the hit ...

A few years back a turbine guy out of Florida (I can't for the life of me remember his name. He was the guy that won the RAM 750F that they raffled off at Florida Jets '99, I think, his nick name was Zoomy or something like that) hit a bird with his Cyclone and caught it on tape. Here are some freeze frames of that (not necessarily in the correct order) and the wing after landing. I remember he told me that it cracked the clear coat on the wing and that was it.

I'll bet that airplane smelled like a Kentucky Fried Chicken!
We had a guy at Randolph take a Turkey Vulture through the windscreen of an AT-38. Landed safely but the airplane smelled like road kill for months[:'(]

I recon I may have ruined thats pigeons weekend. I was so so lucky to get it down( the plane that is). Its amazing to see that even though everything was glued in with BVM aeropoxy the immense shock of that pigeon hitting it a 200mph plus just broke almost everything loose apart from one of the two elevator servos which it flew home on. Need to get it repaired quickly as Lake Wales is not too far away now!!

Strykass those pics are wicked ...talk about an aluminum enema [:@]
We had a Boy Scout fly on Saturday and had one of the Scouts hit a crow with a .40 size trainer. The trainer just stopped in mid air and exploded. I had never seen anything like it before.

I know you didn't realize that I was eating my lunch at the time, but the time stamp will clue you in. Yech!

Its kind of amusing in a way when the airplane says Ministry of Health on the side, and is splattered with you know what!

i and others witnessed the chairman of my local club Bardney in Lincoln (UK) last year fly his aircraft into a flock of crows (aprox 200 birds) on purpose! this chairman is an examiner for the BMFA, he us supposed to be a sensible and upstanding person and i was shocked beyond belief when i saw him repeatedly fly into the flock of birds intending to either have a bird strike or scare them away, luckily none of the birds got hit.

those pics of the animal chopped up wasn't too nice, especially after only had my tea 10mins earlier.

I work for a company in Calgary, Alberta doing repair and o/h on these aircraft and others. We were expecting this plane to arrive on a Monday. We got a call that it would be delayed a bit. It was to come in for an avionics update as well as an emergency medivac mod install. I guess they could have used the stretcher mod a bit sooner. It turns out that the deer was on the runway at night and the plane landed right on top of it. Nothing runs like a deer

Never hit anything with a real or RC plane but the airport I fly out of (KISZ) does have deer on the runway and a black cat that keeps crossing the taxiway a few feet infront of me as I am taxing back to the tiedowns.

i hate to see roadkill or in this case airkill but whats the odds of an rc plane hitting a bird with the noise etc u would think they would fly a mile away but then a 200mph then u wouldnt here it come till it was over[] like a bullit i suppose, sorry guys animal lover here but excellent forum maybe the clubs need some electronic device to worn off birds ,maybe an inflatable scarecrow
