RE: which Facet or AV8R
I never flew a facet, but I've seen alot fly at jet meets and it looks like alot of fun.
I have alot of flights on AV8R's and they are good, but it's a real floater on landing and takes alot of work.
Actually a friend of mine has one and his lands much better. He uses more flap throw and moved the cg back a bit.
Grass field performance is fantastic though.
I'm currently building a Reaction 54 now and can't wait to give it try.

RE: which Facet or AV8R
I just flyed my AV8R this weekend...
The plane is just awesome..he fly like on rails, at the whole speed range..
and for landing, flaps down and you can land very slow...
Turbine handling is made easy by the turbine sitting outside where you can see everything happen...specially if first timer in turbine business..
actually he is like to fly a big prop trainer...[8D]
The only negative point: he requires some building skills...

I agree, you can't be a FACET. Easy to build, no bad vices and don't have to deal with retracts, just fuel it up and fly, which is what a trainer is all about. I fly off grass all the time and, I usually hold a LITTLE down elevator just to get a more "realistic" looking takeoff, otherwise it justs jumps into the air! Takeoff on grass is around 100', maybe less, with a 2300 and 26# takeoff weight (20# dry).

RE: which Facet or AV8R
The FACET 1200 flies completely different from the 2300. My 1200, with a RAM 500, is heavy on take-off-about 12lbs plus about 2.5 lbs (74 fl oz) of kero and can snap at lower speeds, such as the top of a loop or if pulled up too soon on takeoff. Spins are crazy-much faster than 1 per sec. In contrast, a 2300 with a higher thrust turbine, can be slowed to a walking pace. The difference must be in the wing loading. I don't know, off hand, the comparative weights of other turbines vs the RAM500 airborne package, but I bet the RAM installation is one of the heavier. There are some interesting modifications of the FACET, swept wing versions and ? fowler flaps, which I have not yet seen.
Thus the 1200 may be more suitable as a trainer for highly loaded scale airframes, with a narrow margin between landing and stall speed. While it is a simple build and readily repaired, it has some quirks. If you plan to eventually move on to a delta type aircraft, that might tend to favor the AV8R.

I think the P-80 is to much for the 1200. The 2300 is sized for the P-80 type engine and that's what I have in my 2300. During the test flight on mine we tested the slow flight and stall charactristics and with flaps up and a little power we could have full up and it just hung there without stalling. With half flaps it did drop off to the right but it was very slow forward speed when it did. Takeoff was perfect, just a little up to rotate, no tendency to liftoff early.

Scott:
As it has been stated, the P-80 is too-much for the 1200 but perfectly suited to the 2300.
Mark Frankel is flying a 24# (wet) 2300 on a Simjet -1200 std. engine (13# thrust) off grass in 200+ feet without issue w/ 10 degre. of flap.
I would agree with the 2300 / P-80 combination.

Change of plans: Looks like I will go with the 2300 and the p-80. Unless someone has another suggestion. I like the looks of the facet too.
Thanks for all the feed back.
How much of a pain are the AMA regulations to get through. We only have a handful of jet pilots at our club. I will get plenty of help I just hate paper work.
Thanks!!!!!

Looks like everyone beat me to it.
Scott, you are making a great choice. The 2300/P-80 will be perfect. I have flown the 1200, 1200 HP, 2300, and AV8R. I personally like the 1200 for its' "sportscar" feel and all out thrashing around the sky. The 2300 was a little more laid back (but I attribute that to the owner, not letting me have my way with her [>:]), but is a real nice flier and will serve you well as a first turbine aircraft.
Good luck,
George

RE: which Facet or AV8R
Hi!
Well, I have had an AV8R with PST J600 and I am currently flying a Facet 1200 with PST J 600 "R".
The AV8R is much more forgiving and beginner's friendly than the Facet. The Facet is more fun for a skilled jet-modeller than the AV8R, as it is much faster and I think it handles better in aerobatic manouvers. They both are real kits, but went together in a short time. The Facet was less than 6 weeks until it was ready for painting (it is covered with glass-fibre), The AV8R took less than 4 weeks until it was ready for covering in film.
If you want to use a P-80 you might want to go with the Facet 2300 or the DV8R, which is the AV8Rs bigger brother.
Just my 2 cent
David

great choice, the facet 2300 and the p-80, i have 50 flights on mine in the past 12 months,
mine was clocked at 131 mph at top end and at 24 mph on landing at a jet rally in Virginia Beach a few months ago.
you will enjoy the facet with that set up

Scott, I have seen many Facets, AV8R's, and DV8R's at various jet meets. All are excellent and the owners (that I have talked with) of each of them really enjoy them. Another plane you should consider is the Reaction 54. At a meet last month, I saw one fly and was very impressed. I now have one under construction. It is designed for the P60/P70 size turbines. Check it out at BTEmodels.com

i've been watching the posts and my gutt feeling is that the facet is the way to go for a newbie. i want to get one but i'm holding out for the new version with retracts. if your watching kerry , i'd love a sneak peak at the new one your finishing up. rumor has it , it won't be ready till late winter early spring. i also thought about kit bashing the 2300 to take retracts if it will work. warbird_1

AV8R all the way. I have had mine for a few years and take it out at the beginning of the season and do demo flights at various clubs.
The best turbine trainer.
