Default New Panther Project

Well guys,

I have not built a jet for myself and by myself in a long while. I just received my Dan Gill/Barry Raborn panther kit. It has all the bells and whistles. Sliding canopy, blow in doors, speed brakes, tail bumper, tail hook, cockpit kit, and yes it must have smoke. My P-120 arrived and the usual million dollors worth of JR servos. The first work will begin on Friday when I get back in town.

I will post progress photos as work occurs.

I saw the plane fly at Bomber Field and it sold me. I think they have a website with vid?????? Can someone ad to this post where it can be found?

Kevin,

The Bomber Field video is on the website at [link]http://www.details4scale.com[/link] Just click on the Panther Video link. It's only about 3 minutes. Trying to keep the bandwidth down.

Congratulations!

Nice to see the Panther is making a come back. I always thought the airframe was underated. Flew the Ziroli version a few years ago and it was awesome. Nice big fuse, lots of potential drag ( if you need it ! ) nice low takeoff stance, single exhaust duct, simple gear / door arrangement. And best of all had that wonderful presence in the air.

Good Luck

MIne is to the stage of "waiting on the gear". I have the Robart bodies, finally, but now am waiting on the struts and wheels, which were ordered 7 weeks ago...grrrrrrrrr.
This is a beautiful kit and Dan has made every option available. Hopefully I will be getting the lighting kit and cockpit kit in this week so I cans finish up there. I have the gear doors hinged, and front doors with the cylinder installed. Flaps are hinged and servo pockets in place. The rudder is hinged and looks sweet. Keep us posted as you progress so I can see what mistakes I've made along the way. I have the first kit following the prototype and I have spent alot of timeon the phone with Dan who has been a big help to me along the way.

Hey Dean. You mentioned you flew a Ziroli panther. What engine did it have? I saw one flown with a Moore's Super 66 but I think it may have had the thrust output dialed down somewhat. And I have to agree with you, it did have a presence in the air.

It was powered with a RAM 750 which was way dialed down too. Probably around the 15 lb mark. Flew great and floated forever without flaps. My buddy Chuck is building another one and is probably going to put his ol RAM 500 in it which should power it around in a very scale like fashion. PST Jets is producing a 1:6.3 all composite version. Mine is almost ready to go and will be powered by a 600R. I hope to have it flying in the next few weeks!

I have a Ziroli Panther as well. The perfect engine for this plane appears to be in the 14 lb range. I fly mine with a PST 600R. It was an old DF plane which I converted. The plane is a real floater, and the takeoff is very scale like. You end up flying around at about half throttle, Defintely one of my favorite planes.

Well finally got started. Couple of points first. Extend the nose doors forward from the scribe line to allow for the 3" nose tire to clear the opening. Order the robart 100 or 105 nose retract unit to be sure that the gear goes in all the way.

Notice the scale nose strut prototype.

First up was the nose gear former. Minor sanding and all fit well. Spoke with Barry Raborn and her mentioned that the lower section of the former should be doubled. I believe this will be standard on future kits. While the former was drying time to join the fuse sections.

Tape is your friend here. Tape the sections together after sanding off the flash from the molds. Using a 90 degree drill, drill 2 alignment holes for dowells and balsa blocks to be fitted to the tail sections of the former. Now drill 8 8/32 holes around the formers. These will hold the halfs together. Before tightening the bolts install and stand end grain balsa between the formers to fill the gaps.

Next cut out the panels for hiden swiches and fillers valves a nice extra for a scale appearance.

Thats all for now.

Until next time.

doc, there should be no clearance issues, it is just tight, so when i worked on kevin's last night i opened the nose gear door slightly forward. just like the real one there is a lot going on in this area of the jet with the dive brakes and nose gear. take care, barry

Barry and Dan have done a great job on the Panther. It was nice to borrow Barry and his shop for a night. Doc don't panic yet I think that your Glennis wheels will just make it in the hole. My wheels and brakes should be here soon and I will post pic and measure for all.

Barry, I flew at Fort Bend. We should have talked all into Bomber and flown together. Thanks again for all your help. Forgot to mention it at 1 or 2 am as my mind was working in slow moooooooooo as the type o's will attest.

Had to pick up the wife at airport so work to continue Monday night.

Small progress for the brain dead builder. It took all night just to fit and install hiden panel for my switches. Using 1/2 A robart hinges and rare earth magnets finally. I wish I could figure this stuff out like you builders I can only admire for your speed and expertise.

Speed boards were also cut out and holes drilled.

Until next time.

Working on the sliding canopy. Does anyone have pics of the attachment for the rear of the slider? How about speed brakes hinging? I heard Dan Gill has hinging for the speed brakes but I have not seem the hinges yet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Photos to follow later.
