SU-27 Landing Gear scale molds
Hey Fellas!
Thought id post a few shots of the molds for the Flanker project im working. these are basic pre detailing shots. these gear were made to articulate for motion and fit tests. afterwards, they will be dissassembled and further detailed, some parts will be machined, and some will be aluminum cast.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Hey Thanx Ice!
they are for my scratchbuilt Flanker project. Had to take a break from the plane and decided i would work on the systems for a while.

RE: SU-27 Landing Gear scale molds
Thanx ps2727,
Your gears look great. they appear to be totally machined. not familiar with the 104 gear, but it appears they articulate somewhat like an f-16?
the flanker gears im doing are for a 1/6th scale flanker. main gear tire size is about 6.6 inches.
Country Boy, thanx, sla???? now that is really a cmpliment!!! no, these gear were made with a lathe, drill press and scroll saw.

Bela,
The 104 gear is similar to the F16 in that the axle rotates as it retracts but there are a few differences. My gear is all machined and I'm interested in where you'll use castings and how its done. There is much for me to learn.
Nice work on your gear, can't wait to see the rest of your project.

Ps2727
There is much argument and disagreement over which are stronger, castings or machinings, ive found that both have dif advantages, and so im using a combination of both techniges. actually, i think what will be more challenging, will be the best way of making tires this size. and of course, the wheel brakes will have to be custom made.
do you have any diagrams of how the f-16 axels actually turn?

Bela,
I'll have to look thru my stuff to see if I have F16 diagrams. Funny you should mention the tires, I just got some urethane to try making tires. There was a thread on this earlier and it sort of died off. I made a mold for F106 tires a couple of years back but didn't have the right material, hopefully this new stuff will make usable tires. From what I've gathered foam type tires are not easily done in the home shop so it looks like urethane in some form will be my best bet.
Brakes are fairly easy to make on a lathe.

RE: SU-27 Landing Gear scale molds
Hey psps27!
which gear are u planning to cast? I ask, because some gear parts are a better candidate for casting depending on detail amount, detail location and comparative ease of machining versus casting. some, like SD Crashmaster, use casting resin for lo stress high detail areas on top of a basic strong metal base and this seems to be effective also. Im no expert... in fact, using standard casting methods in the past, results had me wanting to take up gardening instead. but with the newer method of using oilpacked sand/ lost wax, im expecting much better results based on past experimentation. but even some of the casted parts will need further machining.
