Flyticoun,
A 1/6 scale Blackbird would be huge... 17.3 feet. I'm pretty big already at 1/8 th scale which puts the finished length at 13 feet. But for as long as that is, the wingspan will only be 2 inches wider than a KingCat. It's just a long, pointy plane. Mine will probably be right on the nose of 55 lbs. If I go with a pair of 17-18 lb class turbines, I should make weight pretty easily. I'd prefer a pair of 25 lb class engines, if the weight will allow me, but I'll have to see.

That's an in interesting idea, that I'm surprised noone has used to solve the twin engine problem really. The MD21 drone that was carried on it's back would provide a central spot for propulsion, but I'd be concerned about it being so far above the centerline of the plane, if it were me.

Since I'm here, to anyone else following along on the project at the link Wayne provided above, just happened to put up another update today. Here's a peek at whats on it:

Hello

I did a mistake it will be 1/9 scale or 1/10.Please can you tell me where you found the plan for the BLACKBIRD?

Thank you LANCE!

It's not really a particular plan, as it's more of a compilation from many sources. It should be pretty dead on scale when it's all said and done, other than a smidge thicker airfoil.

Mine is 1/8 th scale. For reference the Yellow one is 1/12 scale (8 feet, 8 inches long), so it's 50% bigger than that one.

FYI, quite a while back, Byrons made 3 Blackbirds at 1/9th scale, which put it theirs at 11.5 feet long, and were used at their shows in Iowa.

I have seen pictures of at least one in Europe that flies on a single turbine embedded in the center of the fuselage, and pretty good trade off if you ask me.

Perused your build site.
Quite impressive, to say the least!
Can't wait to see that thing filled with go juice and ready to rock.

Nice work,
Paul

Your welcome. LANCE CAMBELL'S project is an awesome one indeed. I have been following along on his website, thanks for the update! I might of have mentioned it before, but if not here is my idea. I want to purchase the first three feet or at least to the rear of the windshield section of this plane that Lance is building. Then I would have my buddy who is a artist, paint a mural on my wall of the SR-71 and position it so the mural follows the section of fuselage I have mounted on the wall coming out at an angle and slightly knife-edged. A 2-D painting morphing into 3-D! I'd have the cockpit instruments so that they light up along with switches and dials. Awesome!

Here's the one from Germany. You can just make out the NACA scoop in the top.

Hi Guy's

Well mine is a very long way from being ready especially since I am dragging my feet because I am not sure of motors for her.

She is an older Kit that I think a fellow is selling the plans for on E bay measuring approximately 105 inches long by 57 inches wide

She does have the chute.

Hi Guys,

OK, bottom line time: Of all the SR-71 kits out there at the moment, which is the easiest to build and fly? I mean, which would be the best introduction to RC models of the SR-71 to help the decision-making process as to whether to embark on a project like the Yellow Aircraft SR-71 further down the line? I see that there's a relatively small-scale one just come available either for EDF or MW44. I think the company that produces them is based in Canada somewhere. Anyone know which one I'm talking about?

All opinions and input gratefully received.

Lance Campbell - you're an amazing guy! I think you and Jai Young Shim (this site, F14 thread) should get together and socialise! Keep going with your "Sled". Hopefully as you're producing a mold, you could bang out some kits of your one so we can all have a go! Good luck.

Very best regards,

Jason.

This is the one I meant: http://www.altecarerc.com/ Although it turns out that's just the Jetcom one: http://www.jetcom-modellbau.de/Blackbird_engl.html which looks quite promising. Anyone out there got any experience of this kit?
