Default BVM F-86 + MW44

Been thinking about a new project. I had a DF powered BV 86 many years ago and it was one of the best flying airplanes I have ever had. What are the thoughts out there about this combination? I have seen the small 86 with a Ram 500 and it's a bullet. I want to stay with as light as wing loading as possible and was thinking the 44 might be a good match.....Ideas?

Tom

Don Yockey used to fly one with the little Golden West turbine (FD/3 something or other) with only 7 or 8 # of thrust and a lot heavier. It looked like it flew very well. The new MW44 puts out over 10#. IMHO it would make a great combination. But don't ask Brian, he thinks his Ram 500 powered one is too slow...........NOT!!!!

Hope your recovery is going well!!!

In 1997 I converted an old BVM F86 from Viojet power to the GWM FD3/67 using the Tom Robertson kit. The aircraft flew very scale like. Later I converted it to a RAM 750 which in my opinion was way too much power and weight for the airframe.

I really liked the plane and regretted selling it so I acquired another BVM F86 ( AFS version ) and subsequently powered it by a RAM 500. Flew very well at 17 lbs dry. Later changed the engine over to the PST J600R ( 14.3 lbs ) and it still flys today ( another owner though ). Personally, I think if you keep the airframe light it would be a real sweetheart with the 44. The F86 is just an overall great looking airplane in the air and a pleasure to fly.

Good Luck

I have one of the new MW44 Gold manual start engines, but I haven't mounted it in a test stand to get familiar with the start technique yet. I bought a used but unflown AMD Hawk arf and am going thru it making a lot of changes. Mostly to reduce weight. I've read reports recently about this second generation 'Gold' 44 turbine and it seems Wren underestimated the thrust output at it's 195,000 max rpm. The reports are putting it at near 10 pounds thrust. That's with Wren's own design tailpipe which they say gives about 5% increase in thrust. It looks like many of the .91DF airframes, if kept LIGHT, would also make good candidates as well as all the .46DF models.

My Green MW44 does nicely in the Jet Hangar Hobby F86, though I wish I had a 'Gold' to make grass field take offs easier and vertical performance unlimited. Not sure a 'Gold' 44 could get the larger and more expensive (2X+?) BVM Sabre off grass. Flying characteristics of the two sabres are probably the same.

I dunno...I've got some stick time on a PST powered one, and it is a great match, but I can't see giving up 4 lbs of thrust, even if the weight comes down maybe 2 or 3 pounds due to the smaller engine and less fuel required....all the other "stuff" - retracts, UAT, batteries, airframe, servos, etc still weigh the same......

Gentlemen
I just started building an old BVM F86Sabre.
I can't make up my mind whether to put a DF or turbine.
Can somebody talk me into/out off putting a DF?
Is a P60 a good engine for this kit?

My BVM Sabre, (very old type!) flies beautifully witha PST 600R, Jetcat P60 would also be very good. Gordon Dickens used to fly a BVM F86 with a Schreckling engine and it flew very well ondeed so keep it light an the new Gold 44 super should be fine. The BVM F86 is a beautifully balanced (ie feels absolutely right) aircraft which is delight to fly.

Regards, David Gladwin.

It is one of the nicest flying jets...it tracks like it is on rails with either power system...

However, if you put a turbine in it, you will never think back regretting that you "shoulda gone with the ducted fan"......a P-60 sized turbine is perfect for it......
