RE: Holy Smokes !!!!
Actually, they are not leading edge flaps. I spoke with an Engineer on Evergreen Cargo my last mission through Guam. He informed me that they are fold out "doors", they act like flaps, but fold out from the bottom of the leading edge. Cool, i like slats better! The C-5, I was told when i was in flight training that with our wing upgrade we normally encounter up to 14 feet of wingflex. We have a system on the plane that reduces this moment by "uprigging" the ailerons (called Active Lift Distribution System). By doing this, it pushes the leading edge down, creating washout and also leaving the wing less susceptible to wing flapping. Go Lockheed!! Nick

It's really more of an optical illusion than an incredibly steep climb out.
You have a zoomed photo from a much higher banking plane causing a near vertical illusion.
Same airplane a few seconds later

Neat video I ran across from another thread somewhere. Shows quite clearly how the leading edge doors work. The amount of wing flex is impressive.

That video gave me the creeps and i fly heavies for a living! That wing looks like it shakes rattles and rolls more than the galaxy though. If you have ever seen a heavy weight (769,000 lbs) takeoff video of the galaxy, check the wings out on rotation. Not only that, check a vid out of a landing, when they through the spoilers out, its amazing how quick you see the wings drop![X(]

you can see most of that when one is empty and they fill it with the just a tad over 50,000 gallon of fuel they hold, i used to love to just watch them fuel up and see the wings flex down.
