Save yourself hundreds of hours of time. Get a Philip Avonds 104. Very scale, extremely easy to build and an outstanding flyer. I have about 100 flights on my Aeroloft/Avonds 104 and enjoy it more every flight. An Avonds kit would be about 3-4 # lighter than the Aeroloft and would fly on a 12# turbine, no gear doors and kept light. The Aeroloft nose section weighs more than the entire Avonds fuselage but the Aeroloft has panel lines and looks better. Mine is 23#dry/26# with 88oz fuel and flies great with a Ram 750. Flights are about 6 minutes with a couple of minutes of reserve fuel left. The airplane is wonderful to fly and lands very easily (after I figured it out). The only problem is the visibility, it is a hard airplane to see as it has no wings. You must have a highly visible paint job. I have the yellow/black hawk (Jabo 33) paint job. On final it looks like a yellow baseball with two yellow pingpong balls coming at you.

I have been developing a 1/6 scale F-104 for the past 12 months and have successfully completed the initial test flights, so far have been very pleased and surprised with the results. Comments from the test pilots Tommy Woods and Larry Kramer have been surprising in that it is fairly easy to fly with takeoffs and landings not requiring the expected extreme high speed. The large flaps and leading edge flaps seem to do their job. We have not completed top end speed tests yet, but from the looks of it, it should have plenty of performance. The new AMT AT 400 has proven to be an excellent choice for the engine, plenty of Jack to give it the power and performance to get up and go. The 104 is scratch built fiberglass foam core construction from molds that I developed. I kept it in primer for the test flying, hopefully I can start the paint and cockpit in a few weeks. Big thanks to Frans Feyen who provided me the initial drawings and Bob Parks for helping with the CG calculations.

* 1/6 scale - 113" long 52" wingspan(with tanks), 1000 sq.in wing area
* AMT AT400
* 31 lbs dry
* Functional leading edge flaps
* Removable plug in wings
* 148 oz. fuel
* Tam Pipe (28" long)
* Air Magic retracts
* Custom Robart Struts (not scale but don't look to bad)
* UP precision air system for gear, doors and brakes
* Gyro on roll axis

Can someone jive me Bob Holman email so i can find out what the price are on the Thorpe Bros plans?? i try looking it up on his web page but it will not load right.. all so what other Thorpe Bros plans are there?? i know about the F-104.. dod thay do others?? i like to find some place here in the US to buy them

His web site I think is not the best, has tons more more than what is shown. Best to contact him for what you are looking for. Thorpe Bros plans are not the cheapest, think I paid like $48 for the F104. He had the canopy, foam wing cores and laser cut formers for it which were very reasonably priced and fit very well.

Thorpe bros had to the best of my memory a F-20, F-104, F-18, Mirage, Phantom? think there was somethingelse but can't remember at the moment.

I saw this plane fly at Superman and it was phenominal!!! The AT-400 really pushed the plane well. The model also turned very easily---Unlike other examples I have seen. All in all, this plane is a winner....Did I say winner??? It won a major award a Superman too!!!

AMA and Paul Blanchard have put turbine engines in our F-104. With the smaller intakes, the plane has great performance. Paul knows how to land this plane. It carries a 40, 50, and two 12 ounce fuel tanks.

There's a few nice sets of drawings of the F-104 in different scales with sections in the very back of the Verlinden Publications LOCK ON No 1. The last set is in 1/32nd scale and could be enlarged by a copy/plan center.

Maybe the CJM gear will work?? otherwise i suppose a simple set of spring air or robarts with some 3/16 wire struts would be fine.

Who said that a F-104 is a difficult subject? with a couple of slight modifications it could be used as a trainer ... (at least in Germany!)

Wow thats a nice one! actually I need some struts that will look ok. but dosen't the full size planes gear pivot at the hub to lay flat in the well?

Yes it does rotate and lay flat against the bottom of the intake ducting. Here is my gear for the Avonds/Aeroloft kit. Now if I could just finish the jet!!
