Yellow F18 TWIN maiden?
I am close to flying a Yellow F18 twin setup with a single P160. Question I have is what should I watch out for? I would like some feed back from those that have flown one as to what to watch for during the first flight and landing. Any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sung,
Make sure the nose gear strut is not bottomed out. We added a stronger spring to keep it up some. This will help the take off by having a slighter higher angle of attack. Also keep the engine spooled up on final, if you go to idle it will stop in the air. lots of drag with doors and all. other than that, it flies like a dream. DO NOT even consider flying in any crosswind.. That airplane hates crosswind. Buck Garza says thats why we always point the carrier into the wind.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Hi Sung,
I ve been flying the 18 with th 160 out at prado past several weeks. Mine is 38 dry at with 200oz of fuel at take off, shes a pig, so gentle rotation and keep her level is a must at take off. She will land sofly even without flap, but make sure the brakes work well. The fuel line tubing as brakes does not work very effectively. Are you going to fly the maident flight at Rabit, if so give me a call (714-269-2088) . I might bring mine out as well.

Yellow F18 TWIN maiden?
Thanks for all of the feedback, at least I have a heads up for what to look for. Ken, I plan on being at Rabbit this Saturday with the F18, Dragonfly, L-39 and a Stingray. Should be fun if not interesting.

Sung, You're reading my mind dude. I was thinking about increasing the size to 1/5 scale but will not meet the 55# limit here in the US of A. I have a new project for next FJ2004.

Eddie,
I hope to see you, your son and your new creation at FJ 2004. I have a few projects in mind for FJ 2004 also, but can't seem to make up my mind which I want to go forward with.

Definitely do not go to idle on landing. been there and done that and it is ugly. And I will second the statement about crosswinds. this bird does not like them.

one more note
sometimes the wind will be right down the runway then right when your landing go to some degree of cross .............when this happens ....IT WILL NOT WEATHER VAIN INTO THE WIND........IT WILL DRIFT AWAY FROM THE WIND DIRECTION ( like a sail boat in the harbor )..........AND IF YOU CORRECT TOO FAST YOU WILL TIP TOUCH THE DOWN WIND WING TIP..........YOUR NEXT REACTION WILL BE TO LAY OFF THE CORRECTION THUS RIGHTING THE PLANE AS YOU GO OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY.........i have seen too many hit fences and such this way
that being said have your spotter inform you of the wind and take appropriate action in your set-up........BEFORE TOUCH DOWN AND BEING SURPRISED
just a thought for you
one more thing.............RELIABLE brakes are a must and the stock yellows are very lacking.............you might look into glennis who has made a much better system..........and much better tires too....unfortunately the arnt cheap..........but is minor in comparision to "the lack of brakes " damage that can be caused

Yellow F18 TWIN maiden?
Well, went out to the dry lake beds and took my time setting up. We spent a few hours toiling under the under the sun and finally got everything ready. Range checked and taxied it around, put it back up on the stand and cycled the gears a few times. On the last cycle the nose got hung up and in the process, snapped one of the pull pull cables, or maybe when we were taxiing it around. We tried for another hour trying to fix/rig the steering, but no go. I guess I will try again, hopefully soon.
Thanks for all of the advice and info.

Sung,
It ain't fair to post pictures of a flying site like that. Up here in Northeast Ohio we've been plagued with wind and rain nearly every weekend. Still got in over a half dozen days of jet flying in the last two months though, and yes jetcats and simjets do start on 40 degree mornings. Makes me want to find an excuse to come visit again.
Your F-18 looks great, bet it will be a fun flying bird at that weight and that much power. Good luck with it.

Mannnn I love me some F18's ..I just recently got rid of my Twin 18 cause the monster was taking up too much space but I plan to get me a YA single real soon .I must have one!! I cant tell from the pic what scheme you used on your 18 sung??
Weather has sucked here too!! rain off & on every weekend for the last month.I have just learned to log my flights in between showers and today even flew in the rain, over it ,I must fly!! .Aint no rain gonna stop this kid ,just wish they made wipers for sunglasses, sure would make things easier And I take to the sky as long as the winds arent over 25-30 mph.Today was harsh only cause the foggy ceiling hung with us allday ERRR
