Im finally getting to putting together the upper wing, here are some photos of the wing as I glue the spruce wing spars and ribs together. I am glueing the wing in one piece then I will add in the webbing. I cant seem to do it like the instructions say going from root to tip. In anyevent, it still seems work out.

Joe, I plan on attenting in 2009 and bring my D6. I jus tneed to know where everyone is going to stay so I can get reservation at the same hotel.
That's a long drive from Cal to here!!

I will soon be changing the color scheme on the DvI and I can take some pics with the cowl off. I have the gun running through the firewall with the barrel slightly bent to make it exit out the left eye-hole in the cowl.

I decided not to change the wing joiners I found that I can get to them both if needed so I dont want to recut any more holes in the ribs. There is a ton of room is you wish to have them mounted inside the two wing spars.

Today I will put the webbing on and secure the wing joiner. 100 inches does not look that big but I dont have a truck bed long enough to fit it so I will cut it in half. [8D]

ORIGINAL: Joe Westrich

I am changing the color scheme over the winter to Max Siedel.
Hi Joe, that was one of the schemes I was looking at, but all the pics I've seen show that Jasta 80b used 4 colour fabric on the fuse, and Glenn says we're looking at late next year for that fabric[sm=cry_smile.gif] Now, Glenn told me about one scheme in the Datafile that uses the 5 colour on both fuse and wings, I'm guessing [sm=idea.gif] that's the one you have, soooo, do you have any more picts of your scheme that I can use for mine?

Or, at the rate I build, I could wait and do Seit's machine

Regards,

Mark.

Max's aircraft is shown with 4 color on the fuse per the datafile. But that's the scheme I want and the 4 color is not available so I made do with the 5 color.

It appears that only Seit has a 5 color fuse per the data file.

I made some progress on the upper wing and am ready to install the saw tooth. I was going to install it when the wing was in one piece but after cutting the center saw tooth ply where the wing will break apart I found that this would not work so I am going to install the saw tooth in two halves so that I can make sure they align with all the ribs correctly. Here are some photos

The last two photos show what I did to the TE. I found that the 1/2 inch spruce TE was not fitting in the center of all the ribs so I decided to shave the width down to meet the width of all the ribs Trailing Edges. Then after I installed the TE I added a 1/8 inch x 1/4 inch cap strip to increase the width back up to the level of the cap strips that I already installed on all the ribs. I decided to install the cap stripping before I installed the saw tooth, it just seemed easier that way.

Finished the saw tooth on the upper wings here are a few shots of them. I still need to put the wing tips on. It come out ok, Im not too happy with it the bottom wing turned out better as I had a few areas where the ply did not lay flat against the ribs so some sanding and filler is needed. The wing comes apart perfectly and I am very happy with that!

Those hinges are harder to make than you think, make sure you use a hammer to bend the center bracket down and take your time or you will get a uneven forld on one side of the hinge. I used my hand to push the screw driver down on two and got two crappy ones...[:@]

Bruno, I agree you need to take your time with the hinges until you get the feel for how they stretch. Mine came out better once I had the right screw driver and shape ground onto the screw driver tip. I used vice grips to hold the hinge strap to the jig while I hammered it (lightly) into shape.

I finished all the hinges, after a few you get the hang of it, my advice is don’t be impatient and work slowly to get the right folds on each side. I decided to use carbon 5/16od tubes for the LE of the ailerons. I got the material at Aerospace Composites in Livermore. Here is their website http://www.acp-composites.com/

I met with the VP there and he gave me a cool tour and we discussed other options other than just using 1/4 inch ply. He gave me some cool scrap pieces to tryout. these are very strong and ridged, carbon outside, foam, wafer board, balsa, fiberglass, and a kinda grate honeycomb material, all sandwiched in between carbon sheets outside. All very cook and very, very light. Hmm...I will have to think about this for my next build. Since they are so close to my home I think I will try them out and the price is very reasonable. I picked up some 5/16 carbon tubes 48' long for 8.99 each. Oh I also got some carbon coated kevlar 7 yards of it, this stuff is very cool. You can use it for fuse bracing, pull-pull cables and much more.

I will start the ailerons tonight. More to come.

Ailerons:

The aileron tips are slightly out of linement so you will have to make some minor adjustments. Here are some photos when I was just fitting all the pieces together before I sanded the ribs round to simulate tubing.......

That diagonal rib looks short. I hate it when stuff like that appears. You just want to make a new one.

You really need to install the hings to your LE of the aileron first before you put your ailer together. Make sure that you secure the hinge collars first before you drill the pin holes that will secure the collars to the LE.

The finished ailerons; now we just need to sand and secure the control horms to the LE then paint them up and they are ready for covering.
I finished the wing tips after fitting the ailerons on first because I did not know what side went to which. Also, the wing tip parts that are needed to make the tipo thicker were to short so you will need to add a small piece of balsa to make this right.

This is the color scheem I have picked for this plane. Its from the 8th Squadron, Hungarian Red Airborn Corps, 1919. I just like the big red star, it will make this very easy to see when in the air Hey does anyone have a sample of the gray they used on the struts and stuff??????? Or what color this is......????? I have to get the paint made at Home Depot and I dont have a sample large enough for them to use to match the paint color [:@]

The only issue with this choice is I cant get 4 color lozenge since GTM does not make it yet [:@][:'(][]

That's a nice and different paint scheme. If you really need to match the grey color paint I would ask your question over at; www.theaerodrome.com but if it were me I would trust my eyeballs and just match a color chip you can find at Home Depot to the color of your profile. It looks to me like the same grey used by Albatros but that's my eyeball speaking. Have you asked GTM if he has a reference for the grey? It's going to be a really nice model when you are done.

RUDDER PICS:

Here are some photos of the rudder fitted together. I just finished gluing the control horn pieces together. I will sand and shape them add to the rudder loose, then make up the rudder hinges and secure to rudder axle. Once the hinge is secure I will glue together the rudder. I have already sanded and shaped the outside edge of the rudder and the two ribs. If you notice I fish mouthed the edges of the rudder at the junction points where the rudder edge meets with the carbon rudder main tube.
