R101,

Thanks for the details. I spoke to a friend who is also knowledgeable with early aircraft, and he said much the same thing as you. As many areas as possible were kept unsheeted to reduce weight. I thought it odd that it was not sheeted below the cockpit since it is sheeted fore and aft of that area. But, apparently, weight was saved wherever and whenever possible. Afterall, with a 40HP engine it needed to be kept light.

I picked up an OS .40LA engine, and I ordered a small muffler for it to keep everything enclosed in the cowling.

I have a decent 1/6 scale full bodied pilot figure to use. But only one so there wont be a "student" pilot (no pun indended).

Beautiful pic of your Bu 180! THe more I get into this project the more I like the aircraft.

Thanks for the info.

Although my Student flies well I have a problem with it.
I deviated from the plan in that I made the wing panels plug-in and when flying in any sort of breeze there is and alarming flexing of the wing.

I have attributed this to the wing joining method (carbon tubes and rods) but don't really know how to solve the problem.

You should be OK if your wing is in one piece.

R101,

Actually, my kit uses a two piece wing as well. The wing is supported by two long sections of music wire passing through brass tubing. Two sections of brass tubing, one toward the wing LE and one towards the wing TE in each the fuselage, and the first two ply ribs in the wing panels. Plus a spring steel brace arranged vertically in the center of the wing rib, passing through the fuselage and the first two ply ribs of each wing panel captured by a brass channel. It seems like it will be strong (but very heavy).

The wings were designed to be easily (?) removable, but I was concerned about the complex articulated linkage set up. I will use a different linkage system to try and prevent any slop in the aileron controls, but it will make it even more difficult to remove the wing panels. The model is short enough length-wise that I may be able to fit it into my van sideways, if so, I probably won't have to disassemble the Bucker to transport it so the 75" wingspan shouldn't be an issue.

Are you considering retro-fitting your wing attachment system to try and reduce the wing flexing?

I used to have problems with aileron control linkages, but now I always install two servos, which is more efficient and easier to hook up.

I'm not sure what to do about the wing joiners apart from ripping them out and fitting heavier duty jobs.

Interesting thought, I was so focused on using a single aileron servo, that I didn't even consider using two servos. Maybe I'll pick up two hi-torque mini servos? I just placed an order with Tower Hobbies for a muffler and wheels, I wish I would have thought of the servos then.

I received the 1/72 scale plastic kit and the book "Cockpit Profile #2" yesterday. The book has several good cockpit photos as well as a nice rear 3/4 view of Bu 180 D-ESJF. I understand your earlier post about needing deft fingers to assemble the Huma plastic kit, it is tiny! The box art, however, will be useful. I scanned the box at a very high resolution (1800+ pixels wide) and the digital representation came out very nice. I reduced the image to 640 pixels and added it to my web site's Bu 180 page http://members.cox.net/wulfman/New_Home/Page_72.html I also did some touch up on the rudder hakenkriez (sp) to get an idea what it would look like painted in authentic fashion.

I installed the rudder/elevator servo tray last night. I hope to get the fin covered with fabric tonight.

I made some progress on the Bu 180 over the weekend. The engine is installed, the tail section covered, the elevator and rudder installed, the fuel tank installed, and the landing gear installed.

Next I need to install the throttle cable and servo, cover the landing gear, work out a way to mount the cowl, then start on the cockpits.

It's getting closer to looking like an airplane, so I thought I'd pull this thread back to the top.

The wings are built. They are attached to the fuselage by an interesting combination of music wire, brass tubing, spring steel, and brass channel. Standard Airtronics "102" servos are imbedded in the wing roots, and carbon fiber pushrods are run to aileron bellcranks.

All that remains before covering the wing halves is to shape the trailing edges.

I'll build the ailerons next to finish out the wings, and then on to the cockpits. I'm not sure how much detail the cockpits will get.

I really like this airplane, I'm looking forward to getting it finished.

Looking good !!

What do you expect the all up weight to come out at - and - did you build in washout?

R101,

As of right now the model weighs 4.8 lb. I'm hoping for a finished weight of 6.0 lb, give or take an ounce or so.

Yes, there is substancial washout in the wing. I don't know how many degrees yet. When I get the ailerons finished I'll check it.

I hope to get the ailerons finished and the wing covered soon.

Wow, this thread was long dead. I still have the model, never flew it. Still haven't painted it. Its been stored in a closet the past 10 years!

Chad, these pics aren't the best. If you want some better pics I can take some this weekend outside in the light. I got home late from work tonight and took these quick to give you an idea of what it looks like. Overall, I'd say it's held up pretty good for being stacked in a corner for 10 years! Of course the wings unplug.

Knowing what kind of craftsman you are Steve I have no doubt that the pictures do not do the airplane justice. I'm getting ready to make two trips out of state for model related events so dollars are in short supply right now. However, I have a number of items that I would be willing to sell in order to raise the necessary funds to purchase the Bucker. Just let me know how much and I will see what I can do.

Chad, I have no idea what it's worth. How about you make me an offer when you're ready and we'll take it from there? Taking a new look at it, it would probably make a nice electric conversion.

Let me see what, if any, cash I can come up with Steve and I will be in touch. I'd really love to have the old girl and electric is exactly what I was thinking as well.

Sounds great, Chad. I also have the Huma plastic kit I'll give you for a paint scheme.
