Default Headmaster 40

Hello. I'm starting to build Headmaster 40. The plan shows 1/4" raft formers (no. 1, 2 and 3) with the x-grain of the wood in width. I don't have a 6" raft. Which is better, cut the former lengthwise or cut 4" and glue another part of 2"? How is it more resistant? Thanks in advance.
