Default Fuel Tanks

Hi all,

I have a 92" cat as my project. I currently have four plastic molded, (they look like common stock size), gas tanks for it. I want to go with two big tanks instead of the four, but I can't find any company or hobby store that sells large tanks that'll fit my boat. I was also thinking of just getting two large custom built aluminum tanks. Does anyone have any companies in mind that'll build custom fuel tanks?

Thanks in advance.

Wal Mart camping dept has aluminum sports bottles, all sizes that fit into bicycle water bottle holders. A little custom work and you have a cool looking gas tank that's already anodized.

this is a 20 oz bottle

Have you considered sports water bottles that are aluminum or Stainless. You could try Walmart, Kohles, REI or similar who all have a selection of colors and sizes (usually 500ml and 1000ml).
I have seen them in[link=http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/kitchendining/drinkware/teamdrinkware2/waterbottles.jsp?ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT%3C%3ENe=&ENDE CA_SEARCH_INPUT%3C%3ENo=0&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT%3C%3 ENs=p_Product_Total_Inventory|1&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPU T%3C%3ENtt=&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT%3C%3Erecs=12&ENDEC A_SEARCH_INPUT%3C%3EN=4294962584&ENDECA_SEARCH_INP UT%3C%3Etype=2&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374755913 724&bmForm=guided_nav_search&bmFormID=130039936034 7&bmUID=1300399360347] brushed stainless steel at Kohles[/link] for around $8 (in the store) which I will be getting next time I am out.

Drill and tap with a few fillings and your good to go (I would recommend securing the cap with a fuel resistant sealant to ensure it does not come loose or leak).

Tanks in my Gecko are Aluminum drink bottles. My buddy who built her dressed up the water bottles with NOS decals

I have seen some guys build some great custom fuel tanks but prices seem to go through the roof and end result is much the same. Cannot help you with links though sorry

I have also seen some nice billet caps made that do a nice job of finishing aluminum water and beer bottles.

Ideally yes. A clunk type setup would work well but with some creativity you could also plumb a pair of pickups from the bottom with a y fitting to ensure consistent flow with fuel movement forward and back. Clunk would be the better option though.

Clunk type uses a hose with a weighted pickup - the weight tends to fall to the lowest point in the tank which should also be where the fuel is. Believe its name comes from the noise made when the weight moves around (Clunks). Most plastic tanks use this type of pickup (Weedwackers, Nitro aircraft, Chainsaws)

Ahh, I wonder if using a fuel filter as the weight would work?

That is the way most weedwackers are setup. As long as the filter has some heft to it (like a weedwacker filter) you should be fine.

Problem being fuel filter gets plugged - easier to use a clunk and run a external fuel filter

chainsaw/weedeater filters do not get plugged easy unless you are filling from a dirty container... the gasser airplane guys use the small Walbro filter clunk designed for 30cc and down engines on 100cc+ engines without issue...

I actually don't run that tank anymore - worked fine just a Dr. Buck fuel bag works better as I can move it around I run a easy to get at filter to carb and I run a filter on my fill line from the gas can I use - so I filter it into the gas bag and out to carb

I get no foaming with the bags and no smell - just works better forme - Scott told me about the Dr Buck and I like em so I have them on almost everything now

Count my vote for the IV/Buck fuel bags too. While they are not so bling - the advantages far out weigh the disadvantages in my book. Between IV bags and White Gas I have a happy marriage.

As Randy also mentioned - use a filter between your fuel can and your boat - pick up a large automotive filter at Walmart for under $5 and you can be sure to catch most all debris before it gets to your model.

Will do once work gets started. It's already rigged but not to my specs, actually too embarrassed to show the enginge compartment, (the guy that rigged it for me didn't do that great of a job).

The best clunk is the felt type it will filter and keep the air out fuel being picked up from any foaming you might have as fuel levels get lower. Unlikely you will plug these type up.
