I use boating grease from a marine store. It has anti sling & anti corrosion properties & is a lot cheaper than buying the same stuff re-packaged from a hobby shop.

I've still got some Prather grease plus some of the Grimracer stuff but it smells funny. Also I got some Speed Lube from Mark Sholund that looks and smells more like polsihing compund.
In the basement I've got some of Ed Hughey's grease but after leaving the jar open I noticed that it liked to absorb the moisture in the air turning it brown.
With all of these I can't honestly say that I've seen any advantage to any of them except Grimmie's doesn't throw the grease around.

I use general purpose grease, fresh each run. When I get in, I remove the shaft, give it a rub off, havea look at it. If there is no damage, it goes into storage ina tube containing engine oil. The theory being that the oil penetrates into all the strands and gets into the heart of the cable.
Quick rub off when ready to go, bit of grease and away for the day.
Not had a failure yet.
