Default Hot esc and motor

this is carried over from the "Lets see those Trex pictures!" topic , sorry about hijacking that topic btw... anyway, i have the RCE-BL25G esc, 430L motor, and a thunder power 11.1v 2100mAh 15c continuous lipo and when i run the heli (even with the canopy off) at about 3/4 stick the esc and motor get pretty hot (i can still touch them, but they are hot!) after only about 2-4 minutes. The battery doesn't even get warm, go figure... anyone have ideas? need to upgrade to the 35 esc?
Normal throttle curve is 0, 50, 80, 90, 100
idle 1 throttle curve is 100, 95, 90, 95, 100

Default RE: Hot esc and motor

I bought an infared temp gauge (traxxas $25 ish). I check all three (battery, esc and motor) after each flight. I used to think they were getting hot. But found they are actually running normal temps.

batteries in 120's
esc in 110's
motor in 130's

I used to think the batteries were hot....now I feel better knowing the temps for sure.

I have the same setup and everthing is cool, are you using 11 tooth pinion and medium timing as recommended?

Keep in mind that your 25A ESC may not be able to handle the amperage the 13T pinion is pulling. Also there are some calculations you can do to see what's going on.

Example:
Your battery 11.1v 2100maH 15C (2100x15)/1000 = Potential Amperage 31.5A

Not knowing if that's the boost C or the constant C, if there is boost 15C/20C on the battery at times you could be pulling 42A

If the motor is demanding more current/amperage the ESC and Battery will try it's best to feed it thus heating up.

The other thing, ESCs and Brushless motors run more efficient and cooler if you run them at constant throttle curve of about %80+ not stick position. Your stick could be at 3/4 but the throttle curve for that point could 65%.

Last thing, I would also check your blade pitch. Too much blade pitch can force the motor to draw alot of current and overheat things.

I have noticed that if the head speed is too low for the gear it will run hotter than a faster head speed. I am running the same motor (3550 kv) with a 12t and about 2600 head speed and my motor comes down cool along with the pack. But when i first set up the heli i had 2200 hs and it was running hot enough to make me think about a heat sink.
